Strategic Upgrading to Serve the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Intertek Zhuhai Opens

On 21 January, an opening ceremony was held for “Intertek Guangdong-Macao Testing Services Limited (Zhuhai)” (“Intertek Zhuhai”), a joint venture co-established by Intertek, a globally leading Total Quality Assurance provider from the UK, and Macao (Hengqin) Investment and Development Ltd., in the Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Industrial Park of Co-operation between Guangdong and Macao (“GMTCM Park”).

At the opening ceremony, guests of honour poured gold sand into a container, bearing witness to the official opening of Intertek Zhuhai. Among them were Secretary for Economy and Finance of the Macao SAR government Mr Leong Vai Tac, Vice-Mayor of the Zhuhai Municipal Government Mr Yan Wu, CEO of Intertek China Mr Bai Xueli, Secretary of the CPC Hengqin New Area Committee Mr Niu Jing, Advisor to the Office of the Secretary for Economy and Finance of the Macao SAR government and Chairwoman of the Guangdong-Macao Traditional Chinese Medicine Technology Industrial Park Development Co., Ltd. Ms Lyu Hong, and Vice-President of the China Chamber of Commerce for Import & Export of Medicines & Health Products (CCCMHPIE) Mr Wang Maochun.

With its official launch, Intertek Zhuhai will remain committed to building a third-party testing and service platform for TCM health products, taking advantage of the platforms and industries of the GMTCM Park, so as to serve the industrial park and a cluster of TCM and health-related industries in the Greater Bay Area and inject strong impetus into the industrial park for its building of an “international TCM quality control base”.

At the opening ceremony, CEO of Intertek China, Mr Bai Xueli, remarked that Intertek, as the first third-party quality and safety service provider in China, is honoured to participate in Zhuhai’s higher-level and broader opening-up, cooperation and integration in the course of its development. Drawing on 130-odd years of global experience and China’s 30-year professional experience, with the support of national strategies such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the plan for constructing the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Intertek Zhuhai will work vigorously from inception to serve Macao’s economic transition and adjustment, supply Total Quality Assurance services with its leading products, commodities and systems, and safeguard export enterprises in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, internationally renowned import brands, and local Chinese brands.

According to Chairwoman of the GMTCM Park, Ms Lyu Hong, as the first project launched under the Framework Agreement on Cooperation between Guangdong and Macao, the industrial park serves as a carrier and platform crucial for Macao to develop its TCM industry. With a focus on installing facilities and building platforms with advantages, the GMTCM Park has scored tremendous achievements and preliminary outcomes since 2015, creating favourable industrial environments and conditions for enterprises to settle. Partnership with Intertek Zhuhai, she added, is one of the major steps taken to achieve the core goal of developing an “international TCM quality control base”, as well as one of the key projects launched to build public service platforms for the industrial park. It is expected that through mutual cooperation and by drawing on each other’s strengths, Intertek Zhuhai could provide improved Quality Assurance services to encourage quality TCM products and related health products at home to “go global” and those abroad to be “brought in”, so as to further promote the industrialisation, standardisation, and internationalisation of the TCM industry.

As a leading third-party testing platform introduced by the GMTCM Park, Intertek Zhuhai has settled in its R&D and Testing Building as an integral part of its public service platforms. Close cooperation between Intertek and the GMTCM Park is expected to play an active role in developing an “international TCM quality control base”. Among global industries, Intertek Zhuhai maintains a leading edge in terms of technological strength, facilities and service experience. It has senior experts and extensive experience in toxicology, formula studies, biology and analytical chemistry, with its business covering areas as diverse as TCM products, healthcare products, medical devices, cosmetics, food, and agricultural products, among others. It provides testing services concerning food nutritional components, health indicators, veterinary drug residues, pesticide residues, heavy metal residues, illegal additives and active ingredients in healthcare products, and the physical and chemical parameters, microbial limits, prohibited and restricted substances, and heavy metal residues in cosmetics. Apart from such laboratory-based services, legal consulting, systems certification, and auditing services are also provided for food, cosmetics, and medical products.

The official opening of Intertek Zhuhai will benefit considerably from the unique geographical strength of the Hengqin New Area and the industrial park’s platform with advantages to further support the industrial park in building its public service platforms and Macao’s commitment to develop its TCM industry. Going forward, it aims to foster a strategic structure based in Hengqin to serve Macao and benefit the entire Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and provide strong support to improve the quality standards of the medical industry in the Greater Bay Area and enhance its international competitiveness.
