Experience and Case Sharing; A Joint Effort to Internationalize Traditional Chinese Medicine
2021 Traditional Chinese Medicine Business Matching Session (Achievement Sharing) Successfully Held
On June 29, the 2021 Traditional Chinese Medicine Business Matching Session (Brazil Session) held by the Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Industrial Park of Cooperation between Guangdong and Macao (GMTCM Park) was attended by more than 70 online and offline participants, including representatives of government authorities, entrepreneurs and distributors from the Macao SAR, Hong Kong SAR, mainland China and Brazil. Following the webinar, two enterprises successfully registered a total of 11 traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) products for export to Brazil. Subsequently, they followed up on other pending propositions for further cooperation.

To strengthen the business network formed during the webinar and further internationalize the TCM sector, GMTCM Park further held the 2021 Traditional Chinese Medicine Business Matching Session (Achievement Sharing) on December 9. Enterprises of GMTCM Park that have achieved international success, along with more than 40 representatives of government authorities, experts and distributors from Brazil, Portugal, Mozambique, Cape Verde and Thailand, were invited to share their achievements on TCM service trade and international cooperation.

Ms. Lu Hong, Advisor to the Office of the Secretary of Economy and Financial of the Macao SAR Government and Chairman and CEO of GMTCM Park, and Mr. Ding Tian, Deputy Secretary-General of the Permanent Secretariat of Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Forum Macao), delivered opening speeches.

Ms. Lu Hong stated that GMTCM Park is a crucial platform for the Macao SAR Government to develop the TCM sector and moderately diversify Macao’s economy. With Portuguese-speaking countries as entry points, GMTCM Park applies the model of “promoting medicine through practice” to explore international TCM markets. The webinar invited enterprises of GMTCM Park that have achieved international success to share their experiences on international cooperation, and various health authorities and international distributors from Brazil, Mozambique, Portugal and Thailand, to share their insights on market prospects and development trends of TCM in their respective countries, facilitate international cooperation and exchange, and promote the popularization of TCM products and technologies.
Mr. Ding Tian, Deputy Secretary-General of Forum Macao, stated that the TCM sector is significant in the Action Plan formulated during the previous Sino-Portuguese Ministerial Forum. GMTCM Park has helped multiple enterprises from both Macao and mainland China to successfully register their patented TCM products in Mozambique, Brazil and other countries, and organized business matching events for foreign and domestic enterprises in the TCM sector. He hoped that experts and business representatives from abroad could exchange and partner with their Chinese counterparts during the webinar to deepen cooperation.

During the webinar, Ms. Anchalee Chuthaputti, former Advisor of the Department of Traditional Alternative Medicine of the Ministry of Public Health of Thailand, Ms. Felisbela Gaspar, Advisor of the Minister of Health of Mozambique, Mr. Paulo Cesar Varanda, expert of the Commission of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture of the Federal Council of Pharmacy of Brazil, and Ms. Leila Rocha, representative of the Ministry of Health and Social Security of Cape Verde, respectively shared their views on the topics of “Status of Chinese and Thai Traditional Medicine in Thailand and Registration of Traditional Chinese Medicine Products under Thailand’s New Herbal Medicine Law”; “Development and Demand of Mozambique’s Pharmaceutical Market”; “Sharing on the Prevention of COVID-19 with Traditional Chinese Medicine in Brazil”; “Development and Prospects of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Cape Verde”, among others. Enterprise representatives raised questions concerning their target markets and received suggestions from the government representatives on gaining access to these markets.

The representative of Macao Pien Tze Huang shared their experience of starting a business in Macao and exploring the international market. Honest Medical (Zhuhai) introduced their businesses in China and Thailand, and Run Heng Health briefed their main products.
Enterprises from mainland China sharing their experiences
Representatives from Yiling Pharmaceutical, Jiuzhitang Co., Ltd., Zhangzhou Narcissus, Gansu Meheco, Kanjoray Medical and other enterprises talked about how GMTCM Park assisted in business matching, product selection, documentation for international product registration and international sales. These enterprises also showcased their R&D, production and quality control capabilities through online videos to overseas distributors. Presently, GMTCM Park has helped enterprises from both Macao and mainland China to successfully register nine TCM products in Mozambique, seven in Brazil, and one product in four EU countries.
Distributors from Portugal, Mozambique, Brazil and other Portuguese-speaking markets in long-term cooperation with enterprises in GMTCM Park, shared TCM market conditions and opportunities in their respective regions. They shared the cooperation history with GMTCM Park and raised questions about favored products. They posed product-related questions to their Chinese counterparts, answered market-related questions, and explored cooperation opportunities.
Cases shared by overseas distributors and the concluding remarks delivered by respective representatives
Finally, Ms. Jessy Sun, Director of the Center of International Cooperation and Exchange (CICE) of GMTCM Park, ended the webinar with a closing speech. She stated that GMTCM Park will remain dedicated to positioning itself as the “Public Service Platform for Overseas Registration of TCM Products (Hengqin)” and “National TCM Service Export Base”and providing more professional and all-around services to bridge competitive pharmaceutical enterprises in China to international distributors. The Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute, the Portuguese Professional Acupuncturist Association, as well as Fusen Pharmaceutical and Zhuhai Tongantang in GMTCM Park, participated in the webinar as well.
